In a press statement at the Parliament, HÜDA-Par Secretary General Şehzade Demir said, “Our moral values are still unprotected” and cited the lifting of the access block to the Sendika.Org news as an example. Claiming that it is an insult to beliefs and moral values, Demir called on the parties in the Parliament to “take the initiative.”
The Constitutional Court’s decision to lift the ban on an article published by Sendika.org, on the grounds of “violation of freedom of expression” was protested by the pro-government, pro-Islam, Yeni Akit newspaper that targeted Sendika.Org by sharing the names of the members of the editorial board.
This time, it’s Hezbollah’s turn to target Sendika.org. In a press statement at the Parliament, HÜDA-Par Secretary General Şehzade Demir said, “Our moral values are still unprotected” and cited the lifting of the access block to the Sendika.Org news as an example. Claiming that it was an insult to beliefs and spiritual values, Demir called on the parties in the parliament to “take the initiative”.
It started with a provocation
The targeting of Sendika.Org began with a post by the Daily Islamist (@dailyislamist) Twitter account that said, “The Constitutional Court considers insulting the Prophet as ‘freedom of expression’!” While the post of this account, which often comes to the fore with provocative calls, became widespread with hundreds of replies and quoted comments, including offensive and threatening statements, Yeni Akit newspaper also published a piece of news targeting the members of the Editorial Board and Editorial Advisory Board, whose names are mentioned in the imprint of Sendika.Org, with a content based on distortion.
The next day, DİSK Basın-İş (press workers’ union from the Confederation of Progressive Labor Unions) showed support for Sendika.org and the freedom of the press. However, the pro-government daily published another attack, “Where do they get this courage from? Support for Sendika.org’s insult of our Prophet (saas) by Disk Basın İş!” Yeni Akit accused DİSK Basın-İş of being disrespectful to religion.
Sendika.Org will not be silenced!
In today’s conditions, where a climate open to provocations has been created with the open encouragement of the AKP-MHP coalition, we do not have the option of not taking this provocative cyber lynching campaign made by malicious accounts and the naming of our editorial board members seriously, or passing them by silence.
We know that such targeting is part of a systematic intimidation operation aimed at suppressing all dissenting voices, not just certain individuals or media outlets, and that we are not alone in being targeted or resisting these threats.
As a media outlet that has been subjected to numerous threats of attacks, lawsuits, investigations, police raids, detentions, imprisonment, fines, and access barriers since its inception in 2001 and has become an icon in the fight against internet censorship, Sendika.Org will not cower or remain silent in the face of these threats.
We inform our readers, friends, and the public that we will initiate the necessary legal proceedings against those who publish provocative posts and news. We will not give in to these reckless threats coming from the side of the Islamist-fascist government and that we will stand against them with all legitimate means and methods to prevent the recurrence of similar acts.
