Democratic organization joined forces in Trabzon, a northern Anatolian town with a press release against the anti-terrorism act.
The press release took place in the local offices of KESK, The Confederation of Public Workers’ Unions.
Haydar Karsan, the president of Tüm-Bel-Sen, the Municipality Workers’ Union, explained the reasons they were against the act.
After the press release, the participants collectively stated calling their Representatives’ cell phones and protested. It was noteworthy that many Representatives in the House either had their phones turned off, or did not want to speak with the protestors.
The following was read to the Representatives on their cell phones:
“Honorable Representative,
I am calling from Trabzon. I am convinced that the Anti-Terror Act to be discussed at the House limits our organizing, communication and press freedoms. An environment where any opposition could be silenced will be established using the relative, ‘Aiding terrorism’ clause.
We demand that this bill be completely recalled and the society’s freedom of expression and organizing be secured under the constitution.”
