Journalist Filiz Gazi wanted to ask Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu about his recent statement, “May 14 (elections) is a coup attempt.” Soylu’s bodyguards took Gazi’s ID and phone and tried to delete the videos
Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu visited the Beraat Mosque in the Hürriyet neighborhood of Gaziosmanpaşa in Istanbul for Friday prayers. Journalist Filiz Gazi, who tried to ask questions to Süleyman Soylu at the exit, was blocked by the guards. Gazi said that the guards tried deleting the videos on her phone.
Journalist Gazi described what happened:
“Minister Soylu replied: ‘Would that happen? I’m saying America. Do you know America? Do you know what they did to Afghanistan?’
Asking, “Can you explain? Let those who don’t know learn,” I continued. He was angry, as his uncanny smile made it apparent. “I am answering the question. May your Friday be blessed.”I continued to record the crowd around him. He looked at me as he approached the exit door and smiled again. Yes, he was unmistakably angry. His bodyguards beside him also pointed at each other through their communication and eye contact. So, I said to myself, “The trouble is coming. The reason is obvious,” I thought I should protect my videos.
Not a second later, guards and police surrounded me. My IDs were photographed. The police took my phone away and tried to delete my videos. But the videos he thought he had deleted were still on my phone. I took my phone and left the area.”
