The first hearing of the trial of Cihan Kolivar, the president of the Bread Producers Union, on charges of “publicly insulting a section of the population” and insulting Erdoğan was held in Istanbul 17. He appeared in the Criminal Court of First Instance.
Kolivar was detained on charges of “publicly insulting the Turkish nation” on the grounds of statements he used in a live broadcast and was later arrested on suspicion of “insulting the president.”
Kolivar was held in prison for eight days.
Kolivar appeared on TV in early November 2023 and said, “Bread is the staple food for stupid societies. Since our society eats its fill with bread, rulers have ruled it for 20 years.” He criticized the high inflation Turkey suffers, where it has become impossible for regular families to buy meat or vegetables due to high prices. According to some economic research institutions, inflation is running as high as 140% today. These conditions force people to afford only bread and not much more.
Giving Kolivar and his lawyer time to file written statements, the judge adjourned the case to June 23.
