The demand to investigate the earthquake relief efforts was based on the fact that the relief agencies sat and waited for the president himself to give the go-ahead to these agencies to move at the most critical time, right after the earthquake hit. After Turkey turned to a “one-man regime” under Erdogan, even most day-to-day operations were tied to Erdogan’s personal permission and conduct. If there is no permission or order directly from the president, no official, agency, or ministry is allowed to move a muscle.
The CHP’s parliamentary inquiry proposal to the Turkish Grand National Assembly on “the issue of people lost in the earthquake and children left unaccompanied” was rejected by the votes of the governing AKP and MHP party deputies.
CHP Ankara Deputy Ali Haydar Hakverdi explained the reason for the demand in the proposal to investigate by saying, “The nation rushed to help. With their hands, with their teeth, with their fingernails, but unfortunately, everyone says, “The government was not there.”

The inquiry demand emphasized: “Because those in power have cut off the columns of the state. Because those who went to extinguish the fires only with instructions, the one-man regime, unfortunately, turned the disaster into a deeper disaster. Hundreds of our lives are still missing, and hundreds of our lives are being sought under the rubble. As CHP, the opposition party, we have established a commission on this issue, and we are doing our work. We met with the families, with governors and the judicial prosecutors’ offices.”
The government coalition party MPs rejected the inquiry, indicating there was nothing to necessitate an investigation.
