Mostly women workers who are organized under the Food Workers Union are on their 8th day of struggle against privatization and contracting.
The government tried stopping the workers from all around the country gathering at the capital by erecting road blocks and stopping them from even leaving their cities and towns.
The organized and determined workers however were able to push through the government’s fascistic oppression to reach and stage a peaceful demonstration against the attacks of the government.
The police were unleashed against the peaceful demonstrators who were beaten brutally and sprayed with pepper gas and water. Many workers suffered heart attacks and seizures.
On its 8th day, the workers are still resisting and fighting back against a fascist government of “moderate Islam” supported fully by the USA to implement capitalist market rules against the people and workers of Turkey.
Many unions and confederations paid visits and staged solidarity demonstrations for the TEKEL public workers. In addition, progressive and socialist labor parties and associations have taken to the street to support the workers fighting for their future.
The latest support came from the academicians in the universities around the country, especially from the development, labor, and economy departments. The academicians issued a common declaration on the state of work, employment, and conditions of work.
In the declaration the following statements take place:
“We, the faculty of many Economy of Employment and Employment Relationship departments which have adopted the principle of a work environment commensurate with human dignity and the right to be employed, are concerned in the recent developments in the work environment. We are seeing that the negative behavior and intolerance against the workers have elevated to the level of violence. Some examples of this violence can be found in the disproportionate use of force against the TEKEL workers and the firefighters all defending their rights as well as the railroad workers defending their right to a bargaining contract….”
Hundreds of professors and faculty staff have signed the declaration.
