According to the regular monthly study on poverty conducted by Türk-İş, the largest confederation of labor unions in Turkey, in order for a family of 4 to eat a balanced and a healthy diet the cost of groceries would amount to 573 YTL ($440.00) per month. Also, the poverty line was calculated to be 1,868 YTL ($1,436.00).
The study revealed that the recent price hikes of the last months have put the budgets of many families under duress. The working people are forced to pay 30YTL more for food alone and 99YTL more for basic necessities compared to the beginning of the year. The pay raise the public service employees or the retired received due to calculated inflation amount was wiped out with the price hikes that took place in the first 7 months of the year.
According to this study, the changes in the food index for July 2006 shows the following:
“The minimum food expenses for a family of 4 living in the capital, Ankara, has increased 0.31% compared to the previous month. The amount of increase in the food expenses in the first 7 months of the year totaled 5.6%. The increase in the same period last year was 3.14%. When calculated for the last 12 months, the increase in the food costs is 8.17%. This translates to a yearly average increase of 7.18%.”
