The resistance of 16 workers fired for joining the Birleşik Metal-İş, steel workers union is continuing their struggle. The workers have stated that they were experiencing great economic hardship and were expecting support from unions and labor organizations. They also stated that they intended to continue their struggle until they were taken back to work.
One hundred and fifty six workers are employed at Tabosan which manufactures steel construction materials and gas tanks. The workers unionized at the plant against low wages and a demand for work place safety against occupational accidents. The bosses then fired 16 workers 20 days ago. The reason shown for the sacking was, “decrease in the orders and shrinking business.” Yet the workers have claimed that the work load had gotten much heavier. The workers have not been paid the compensation packages either.
