A young school girl was beaten up by a cop in front of the police station for wearing what the cop thought was an inappropriate skirt. Mother says they had asked her daughter to walk to school from that street, thinking it was safe. Now, every time the student sees a police, she starts crying.
Sixteen year old student had left home to go to school with 3 of her friends. After shopping at the local market, she started waiting for her friends. A police approached her while she was waiting and asked, “Are you going to school in that skirt?” and started pushing and shoving the young girl. As a coincidence, two teachers from the school were there to witness the harassment. These witnesses made the student brave enough to complain officially about the incident. An investigation has started on the incident and against the police officer Dursun Ali Morgül.
Istanbul Chief Security Officer Celalettin Cerrah on the other hand said there was no beating up in the incident, but when the police officer saw the young girl, he acted as if he saw his own daughter! He also added that the police officer would undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Young girl reported, “There were four of us. I shopped at the market. Two of my friends were sitting in front of the police station on a bench. The police had gone to my friends there and said, “You can not sit here with those skirts. Don’t you have any shame?” Then he came to me and asked if I was going to school in that skirt. Before I could even answer, he kicked my legs. He grabbed me by my shoulders and threw me against the stairs. If I was not able to hold on to the rail, I would have fallen. At that moment, two teachers from my school were approaching. They also saw the police shoving me. When I went to school, they said I needed to complain.”
However, when the young student went to the police station and described the attacking police officer, the officers there said they had no police there that resembled the description. They send her to the Bureau of Children Affairs. There, a women officer was helpful and told her to go to the station and demand to watch the security videos to identify the police. The officers than said their computers were broken and they had no video images available. But when the young girl insisted, the videos appeared, and they all watched the video together. The police was clearly in sight in the images.
Psychological Problems
The victim student, together with her two friends who were sitting on the bench has filed complaints with the DA. The witness teachers also testified. She said, “My daughter is experiencing psychological problems. She starts crying when she sees a cop. She can not stay at home alone.” The young girl has been taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Official Investigation
When the mother went to pick up her daughter from the school the next day, and were returning back, the student saw the same officer in front of the police station and said, “I could hardly contain myself. I was distressed. I wanted to go and yell at him.”
The police authorities have started an investigation on the event.
