April 10, 2006- Revolutionary democratic students prevented the display of some fascist pictures in an exhibition opening in the University Library. The exhibition was arranged by some students from Ülkü Ocağı – a nationalistic rightist organization.
The police, special security forces and members of Ülkü Ocağı coming from nearby towns decided to open the exhibition which included pictures of Alpaslan Türkeş (the late leader of nationalist rightists) and also pictures of communist leaders (such as Lenin, Stalin, Mao etc) depicting them torturing people, in the Exhibition Hall of the Ministry of Culture.
The University students then wanted the exhibit to be closed in ten minutes because “we shall not permit the pictures drawn by the enemies of the people into the university grounds, we shall not let the fascists guilty of the killings in Sivas and Maraş. The University is Ours. Get out immediately!” Under the protection of the police and the special forces, the rightists attacked the students with knives and sticks which they had brought along. Three students were injured. None of the injuries were life threatening.
The students were able to repel the attackers who left the grounds under police protection. Meanwhile, the police blockaded the revolutionary group in the building where they were able to destroy the offensive pictures.
After the attack was over, the students made an announcement stating that what happened clearly indicated the close collaboration between the police forces and the rightists. They also said they would continue to defend their university from rightists and their collaborators.
