The inequality in income distribution in Turkey continues despite some insignificant improvement in the earnings of the low, middle and upper middle segments. The Turkish Bureau of Statistics has announced the result of its survey “The Household Income in 2004”. According to the survey, the criterion used to measure the equality/inequality in per capita income distribution has gone down from 0.42 to 0.40. If the ratio moves up towards 1, it means the inequality in income distribution is increasing and if it moves towards 0 it shows an improvement in equality. Changes in income distribution from 2003 to 2004 are as follows:
*In 2003 the share of the lowest 20% was 6% of the national income. This did not change in 2004.
*The share of the next 20% group increased from 10.3 to 10.7%, the next group from 14.4 to 15.2%, the next 20% from 20.9 to 21.9. The share of the highest 20% decreased from 48.3% to 46.2%.
*The share from the national income of the lowest 20% segment of the urban families went up by 0.3 points. Meanwhile the rural families got poorer.
*The share from the national income of the families in the highest 20% group is 12.4 times higher than the share of the families in the lowest 20% group. The difference was 13.4 times in 2003.
