It has been a year since the workers were expelled from Ileri Deri and their sit in strike to get their jobs back still continues.
The local court had decided in favor of the workers but the Court of Appeal reversed the lower court’s decision.
Soon after the workers of İleri Deri joined the Deri-İş Union, they were asked to resign from the Union and those who refused to do were fired. When the workers went on a
sit-in strike to protest their expulsion and demand to be rehired, the employer notified the authorities of the closure of the business, then rented out the workplace and changed the title of the business to Müge Deri.
The deputy president of Deri-İş Union, Musa Selvi said the closure of the workplace had been fraudulent, the same employer was still in charge and the change in the title was on paper only. Furthermore, the employer hadn’t given the notice of closure one month in advance as required by law.
Selvi thought the reversal of the decision in the Court of Appeals by majority vote would hinder the workers from joining a union and would set a precedent that would result in upsetting work peace. He said they would appeal again.
