RTÜK fined Halk TV 5 percent monetarily and suspended 5 programs for promoting Selahattin Demirtaş’s short story book “Dad”
The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), a Turkish government censoring institution on media, imposed a five percent fine on income and five program suspensions on Halk TV for promoting Serhan Asker’s program that discussed the book titled “Dad” by former HDP, the progressive Kurdish-based party’s co-leader Selahattin Demirtaş, who is in Edirne F Type Prison for trumped up charges. Very recently, the European Union courts issued a verdict to release Demirtaş immediately due to charges not holding up.
RTÜK Member İlhan Taşçı announced the decision on his social media account. Taşçı also said, “A three percent fine was imposed on the grounds that Turhan Çömez’s statement on the program “Let Halk TV’s Record Set” program that people connected to respirators died because the generator did not work in İskenderun was a broadcast contrary to the principle of impartiality.” The Turkish government is under attack for failing during the earthquake relief efforts and causing most of the deaths in and around Iskenderun when people were left under the rubble. There were widespread complaints that the funds for earthquake relief had disappeared and the efforts could not be coordinated due to the privatization of the relief agencies.
