Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality teams came to the religious sect’s illegal buildings to demolish the structures. The Hiranur Foundation, which is affiliated with the İsmailağa Community religious sect, is a secretive fundamentalist organization that works very closely with the governing AKP party and Erdogan’s regime. The Islamic sect has been on the national news with the sexual abuse scandal of little children.
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) teams demolished the Hiranur Foundation’s illegal structures affiliated with the İsmailağa Community. Although the buildings had been erected without proper licenses or permits, the local Sancaktepe Municipality did not intervene despite all objections and document filings. The same AKP party of Erdogan runs the local Sancaktepe government. However, the Istanbul Greater Area Municipality, also known as the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, is run by the main opposition, the Peoples’ Republican Party. The teams that demolished the dangerous structures operated under the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM).
Dangerous buildings are at the center of the immense loss of life after the earthquake hit Turkey. The contractors that were friendly to the AKP regime were given a free ride to build shoddy, unlicensed, and low-quality buildings that collapsed at the first shake of the ground.
According to İsmail Arı from BirGün daily, IMM teams, which took action earlier in the day, came to the Hiranur Foundation’s buildings in Sancaktepe earlier in the day. ISKI and AYEDAŞ teams, working for the utility organizations that provided gas, electrical power, and water, came to the secretive Islamic sect’s buildings to cut the electricity and water sources of the illegal structures.
A large number of IMM teams came to the front of the foundation for the demolition. The foundation, understanding there was no alternative left but demolition, started demolishing its own illegal structures with its own work machines and personnel.
The Hiranur Foundation’s illegal structures were sealed, but its lawyers filed a lawsuit against the IMM at the Istanbul 4th Administrative Court. The foundation demanded that the IMM allow entry and usage of the sealed illegal structures “by filling a building permit report.” On March 15, the court rejected the Hiranur Foundation’s request because “the conditions for the suspension of condemning of the buildings do not coexist.” With this court decision, there was no obstacle for the IMM to execute the demolition decision for the illegal structures.
