The men reciting Islamic prayers and swearing at the women attacked the crowd under the protection of the police. When the women resisted, then after the press release finally ended the women’s day celebration and started walking back to their office, the men continued harassing, swearing, and following them to the doors of the women’s organization. The men, reported one Twitter user, were waving the green flag of Islam and were screaming Allahu-Ekber, an assault slogan meaning “the God is great” commonly used while attacking an enemy.
A gathering and the march organized by the Women’s Platform of Erzincan came under attack by an organized gang of religious men. The women had lit candles to commemorate the dead in the Feb 6th earthquake in the region of Maraş. The organized Muslim men had been following the women’s march but attacked when the ending press release was being read.
The police were present but did not interfere when the men entered the same square the women were reading their press release on the corruption of the government that prevented relief efforts for the earthquake victims. Instead, the police asked, then tried to force the women to disperse together with the bigots.
