On the fifth day of the earthquakes that occurred in Maraş on February 6, the bodies of Hatice Can and Mithat Can, activists of the human rights struggle, were found during the search and rescue efforts in Hatay. Their son, Eren Can, made a call.
Hatice Can and Mithat Can, who lost their lives under the rubble in the earthquake in Hatay, were commemorated and sent off by their family and comrades at the Tarsus Green Neighborhood organization office, which became the condolence center. The commemoration was attended by democratic mass organizations, especially the Halkevleri and Human Rights Association, in which Hatice Can and Mithat Can fought together.

Tens of thousands of people who responded to the call shared #Pencerende1MumYak and #PencerendeBirMumYak tags on their social media accounts. At the same time, silent actions were also held in the streets in some provinces, especially in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, the largest three cities in the country.
Mehmet Bozgeyik, a sympathizer, tweeted: “Millions lost loved ones, neighbors, witnessed the destruction of the cities they grew up in. A month has passed, and the most basic needs of the earthquake victims have not been met yet. Only three or five contractors were found guilty of corruption. No political responsibility. For those souls, you too #PencerendeBirMumYak” and asked for lighting candles.
Women’s Defense, a feminist organization, also joined: “We also lit a candle for those who are here and will no longer be here in Purple Space and in front of the Human Rights Monument. It’s been a month since the earthquake. The most urgent demands are still not met. Our mourning is the seed of our rebellion.”
