Friends protest the death of Gabonese student Jeannah Danys Dinabongho Ibouanga, whose body was found in Karabük, Turkey. After the body of 18-year-old Gabonese national Ibouanga, a preparatory class student at Karabük University, in Turkey, was found by the Filyos River, Gabonese students staged a demonstration in front of the Rectorate building on the campus of the university, demanding answers on the mystery of her death.
The previous day, the body of an unidentified black woman was found near the Filyos River in the Yeşil köy area of the Karabük-Zonguldak highway.
Yesterday (March 27) at around 11:00 PM, the driver of the train passing near Yeşilköy informed the authorities when he noticed that a person was motionless in the Filyos Stream. The body was pulled out of the water and taken to Karabük Training and Research Hospital for autopsy. The gendarmerie launched an investigation into the incident.
As a result of the work of the gendarmerie, it was determined that the body of the black woman found belonged to Jeannah Danys Dinabongho Ibouanga, 18, from Gabon, and that she was studying in the preparatory class of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Karabük University.
Gabonese students demonstrated today (March 28th) in front of the Karabük University Rectorate building.
According to the DHA report, international students, who claimed that they could not get information from the authorities, gathered in front of the rectorate building of Karabük University. Carrying Dinabongho’s photo and banners reading “Justice for Dina,” the group marched to the university’s main entrance, chanting slogans in French. Riot police teams closed the university exit with armored vehicles and shields and did not allow the group to leave the campus. After shouting “Justice for Dina” for a while, the group returned to the university.
Justice to ‘Dina’! What a shame,” said Orphe Moise, who carried a sign that said she last saw her sister last Saturday, adding: “We want justice. Yesterday I went to the police, and they asked me questions. I said I wanted justice for my sister. She was new in Turkey. She had come to study. She was killed here. Why are blacks always killed? I want to know who killed my sister, who is to blame? I think it’s murder.”
Yara Abounaida, a Sudanese national, said: “We have come here to support and seek justice. May she rest in peace. She was a student; it hadn’t been four months since she came here. It does not make sense for her to go for a walk into the woods on her own. We want the truth. We want the authorities and the university to explain to us what happened to her. We are only students, our safety is paramount.”
Prince Festus, who said that blacks are sometimes harassed, said, “If such an incident happened to a white person, it would not be treated like this. We know her body went through the autopsy. In this season, no one enters the river for a swim. We don’t just believe she drowned, we think someone killed her and threw her into the river.”
