Workers at Dominos Pizza’s Altınşehir and Merkez branch in Adıyaman, the epicenter of the earthquake, learned from the employment site of the Turkish Government, E-government, that they were fired on February 6, the day the earthquake hit their homes.
The workers said that they could not even receive unemployment benefits because they are shown as ‘resigned’ on the official employment E-Government site. Fired workers called the branch managers and learned that the branch manager didn’t know anything about the dismissal either and that the decision came from higher officers.
According to Dilan Esen from BirGün daily, one of the laid-off workers stated that he started working in December 2021 and that his insurance was submitted three days after he started to work. The worker, who claimed that he was made to sign a letter of resignation and some similar documents before entering the job, said, “If I did not sign this, they would not hire me anyway. My dismissal was made on February 6. Our house was destroyed, and my brother was injured in the earthquake. Our neighbors and our relatives passed away in the earthquake. While we were trying to rescue them from the rubble, they fired us. We met with our manager, but he said he didn’t know. He talked to the general manager, and he didn’t know either. Probably the owner of the business dismissed us, but he is not local; he is in Urfa.”
The worker, who said the workers did not receive unemployment benefits because Domino’s Pizza shows the workers as having “resigned” instead of laid off, said:
I didn’t get any of my rights; we want all our rights. We don’t get unemployment benefits. They made us sign documents so that we would not get compensation. We are victims. We petitioned our lawyer. The case will be filed when the courthouses open on April 6.
