A reactionary Islamist group attacked the press release on the theologian writer Cemil Kılıç who was attacked earlier. Police detained Toplumsal’s reporter Özgür Avcu and cameraman Sercan Yılmaz as they tried to record the attacker and the attack.
Theologian and writer Cemil Kılıç was injured in an attack carried out by a reactionary Islamist group shouting, “Allahu Akbar (God’s Great)” while he was walking to his house at around 3:00 AM the other day.
Today, at 2.00 PM, a press release was held in front of Cemil Kılıç’s house called by Eğitim-İş, the Union of Education Laborers.
Writer and theologian Cemil Kılıç challenges the political and orthodox interpretation of Islam. He promotes a softer and more rational version of Islam that contradicts the current strict Saudi Arabic, Iranian, and Turkish regime’s interpretation. He is the author of many books on the subject. He was a teacher. However, the government fired him due to his approach to Islam. He is a Kemalist and promotes secularism as opposed to the strict law of Islam or sharia. The courts recently found his firing unlawful and reinstated him. A few days back, when he was approaching his home at 3:00 AM, unknown assailants attacked him with sticks and injured him. Yesterday’s press conference was to give information on the events and call attention to the escalated attacks around Turkey by the Islamist thugs.
According to Toplumsal’s report, education workers who called a press release meeting were harassed by a group of reactionaries before the statement. As the announcement drew to a close, a person believed to be from the same group came close to the education workers and journalists who were reading the press statement and shouted at the journalists that the nation would teach them all the necessary lessons on May 14, and kept shouting the name of the president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The police, who did not prevent the attacker until he stepped into the crowd, detained Özgür Avcu, a Toplumsal reporter, and Sercan Yılmaz, a cameraman, who were trying to cover and record the incident.
