We have no tolerance for those who target 6284 and civil rights, those who ignore the constitutional principle of equality and secularism, those who extend their hands to the alimony of women and children, those who discriminate, those who forgive abuse, those who ignore LGBTQ+, and those who ignore femicides!
Neither the lives of children nor the lives of women can be the material for your dirty policies! We are here; We will continue to weave spaces, struggle, and solidarity with the power of our sisterhood!
In the press statement of Antalya Women’s Platform, it was stated that “We are not giving up our lives and rights”
The Antalya Women’s Platform organization held a press conference reacting to the fact that the Law No. 6284, the law that protects women’s rights, had opened a debate considering the conditions for the Re-Welfare Party to join the Republican Alliance.
Erdogan’s regime is grasping at the straws to gather any votes it can get for the upcoming elections on May 14th. It is already running 10 points behind the main opposition party. In its quest to find anybody that could bring even a handful of votes, it invites parties who have been at each other’s throats even for ideological reasons.
Erdogan’s government is already in a coalition with the neo-NAZI nationalistic, racist party of the street gangs, MHP. This coalition junior partner is hellbent on the racist track of Turkishness and refuses to even mention the word “Kurd” when up to 25% of the population identifies themselves not as Turks but as Kurds.
Looking at an election process where the loss of power seems certain, Erdogan invited yet another dangerous little party of terrorists set up by the deep state of Turkey, the Huda-Par, and the so-called, the re-Welfare Party. Huda-Par is an ultra-conservative, fundamentalist Islamic Kurdish party that the secular Turkish State formed to divide the Kurdish population and get them to abandon the progressive causes and turn to Islam. It is easier to control the Kurds when they become more religious. However, taking part as a Kurdish party in a coalition where another, more powerful fascist member is a sworn enemy of the Kurds will be interesting.
However, the issue is not only identifying as representing the Kurds. A similarly aggressive approach is to women’s rights. Huda-Par, being an Islamic party and a fundamentalist organization, hates anything that represents any rights to women. So, as a precondition to joining Erdogan’s alliance and providing albeit a few handfuls of votes, is for the Turkish Republic to repeal the law 6284 that has some protection for women.
As Turkey inches towards sheria law and moves away from any indication of democracy, this attack didn’t come as a surprise. Erdogan had pulled out of Istanbul Convention that provided protection against domestic abuse and other attacks against women. However, women will not accept the rolling back of their rights.
Antalya Women’s Platform came together today (March 16) at 19.00 at Attalos Square. However, due to the torrential rain, the statement planned to be read in the square was read at the Eğitim-Sen, the union of education workers branch.
The statement, titled “We are not giving up our rights, our lives,” said:
During the AKP’s 20-year rule, we witnessed that it has plundered every field, from education to health, from law to nature. The government, which has corrupted every field in order to feed the darkness it has created, has never stopped trying to drown the children, women or the LGBTQ+ people in the dark. We were always in the field with our sisters in solidarity and side by side against this dark order that was created! As the election date approached, the power that left the people in the earthquake region to themselves and saw that his own power remained under the rubble sat down with HUDA-PAR and the Re-Prosperity Party in order to continue the palace regime. In the election negotiations, women’s lives were their first targets! Take your hands off 6284, which is based on the Istanbul Convention!
With the Law No. 6284, which deals with women independently of their families, it is necessary to provide shelter services to the woman and their children who are victims of violence, to ensure that they are taken under protection if there is a danger to their lives, to provide temporary financial assistance to women and children, to provide psychological, social and legal support, and to provide nursery support.
With this law, women who are victims of violence can request a change of identity, protection and care, the confidentiality of their address, a suspension order for the perpetrator of violence, temporary custody and alimony, temporary financial assistance, and the benefit of general health insurance.According to Law No. 6284, evidence or documents related to violence are not required for the issuance of protective measures, and the woman’s declaration is accepted as essential.
Doğan Aydal, deputy chairman of the Re-Welfare Party, said in a statement in Habertürk that they had forwarded the list of demands for the abolition of Law No. 6284 on the Protection of the Family and the Prevention of Violence Against Women to the ruling AKP and that they were given the answer “there is no problem.”
On the other hand, Minister of Family and Social Services Derya Yanık said, “The existence of Law No. 6284 with its spirit and presence is extremely important. In our opinion, even questioning of its existence is unacceptable. Law No. 6284 is one of the most important legal arrangements we have made to combat violence against women. Since the adoption of the law, we have been meticulously continuing our regulations to improve the application.” While making a statement about the rumors that 1000 children were missing in the earthquake, we ask Minister Yanık, who uttered, “We assume that a significant part of them are in health institutions”: Do you think that this statement you made while you were still unable to protect the children of these lands while accepting that the children in the earthquake region were handed over to religious organizations, while you are protecting rapists and murderers instead of protecting women, was credible?
We know that 6284 is not the only issue targeted by HUDA-PAR and Re-Prosperity. Allying with these organizations, which seek to control all life, including women’s movements and words, according to their own determined, limited, and misogynistic interpretations of religion is a direct attack not only on the Law 6284, but also on women’s right to life.
