Correspondence was discovered in which the director of the Red Crescent’s Istanbul Disaster Response Center, Abdurrahman Yıldırım, distributed tents to the relatives of some Kızılay executives.
A new scandal in Kızılay, the Turkish relief governmental agency that raised eyebrows previously for selling tents and food to earthquake victims and other volunteer relief agencies, emerged where the much-needed tents were being given to the relatives of the officials. The correspondence of Abdurrahman Yıldırım, who is the Director of the Kızılay Istanbul Disaster Response Center and who was appointed as the Head of the Kızılay Malatya Team after the February 6 earthquakes, distributed tents to the relatives of some Kızılay managers while the earthquake victims who applied in the WhatsApp group named “Malatya Team Presidency” were told “there are no tents.” Sendika.Org was able to access the correspondence that reveals the lies told to the victims and the transactions. In the correspondence, Abdurrahman Yıldırım is seen to have given instructions on how many tents to be given, specifying the names of various people.
While tents were stacked up in the warehouse, earthquake victims were told that there were no tents.
Kızılay did not distribute the tents, stating that AFAD, a sister relief organization, was responsible for distributing tents in Malatya.
Earthquake victims requesting tents were told, “There are no tents.” The images of Kızılay’s warehouse in Malatya indicate the opposite. Photographs show there are many tents in Kızılay’s Malatya warehouse.
