On February 9th, the resistance of Oztas Socks workers, who stopped work against the boss’s imposition of a low pay offer and was subsequently laid off with code 49, resulted in a win.
After the bosses met with the workers, including the ones they fired, Deriteks union said in a statement that the demands of the workers were largely accepted. Among the top demands, 6500 lira salary, dismissed workers to return to work, and the readmission of other fired workers who participated in the actions was accepted.
History of the struggle
At Oztas Socks, which produces socks for brands such as New Body, Falke, H&M, Marks&Spencer, and Eurosock, workers went on a strike against the boss’s imposition of a salary of 5800 liras. The current average wages on the market ranges from 6500 to 7500 liras, the workers said, reminding that workers in some workplaces recently received a 70-80 percent increase.
Another problem for the workers was the pressure of the bosses to increase the production and to speed it up. Workers who said they were under pressure at all hours to deliver the orders said they were subjected to harassment and could not take their vacations or days off.
When the workers did not leave the workplace, the police, called by the bosses, raided the factory and detained the workers. All 68 workers were fired without compensation under code 49. All of the laid-off workers are members of the Deriteks Union.
