Workers organized with the GDG-SEN union at Migros Esenyurt Warehouse continue their strike action on their second day against the minimum wage imposition.
Resistance from Migros Warehouse workers continues: We do not accept the imposition of an 8 percent increase when inflation is more than 100%
DGD-SEN workers working at Migros Esenyurt Warehouse in Istanbul continue their work stoppage against the imposition of minimum wage on their second day. In a statement given inside the warehouse, the workers announced that they would fight until their demands were met.
“We do not accept the imposition of an 8 percent increase in Esenyurt Migros Depo, we demand a 70 percent increase. Our work stoppage will continue until our demands are accepted.” Workers have wage demands equivalent to 70 percent on their current salary (2021 salary) and 20 percent on the minimum wage (2022).
The inflation, especially in the last three months, has hit record levels with an independent study calculating it at 114%. This means anything below a 100% raise will actually end up as a loss to the workers.
Morning and night shift workers went on strike and stopped work. Facing disrupted production, the management of the company prevented the workers working the middle shift from coming to the factory by giving them paid leave. The management fears workers of different shifts to get together and expand the strike.
While the workers in the resistance were sent threatening messages that they would be fired, it became known that the police were preparing operations against the workers. However, the unity, solidarity and support the workers are receiving made the bosses change their minds for the time being.
The workers will make a press release at 2 p.m. and reiterate their demands.
