Erdoğan’s newly appointed Attorney General moves to shut down the progressive, Kurdish opposition party as the government faces an unprecedented electoral support loss.
After imprisoning its leaders and elected National Assembly representatives with trumped-up charges, Erdoğan is still unable to stop his government’s downward spiral.
Now comes the ultimate solution: Shut down the opposition altogether.
HDP’s leader is in prison for the last 4.5 years after a sham trial. The Human Rights Court of the European Union found the charges and the entire trial process without merit and ordered his immediate release. Turkey is a signatory to the European Union agreements and must abide by its judgments. However, when it comes to releasing the opposition leader Demirtaş, Erdoğan openly defied the court order, saying Turkey is a sovereign land and will apply its own rulings without outsıde intervention.
Yesterday, another HDP National Assembly member was under attack. The Assembly removed Gergerlioğlu’s MP status charging him with doing “terrorist propaganda.” He had criticized the government, and for this, he had to be punished. Erdoğan appointed loyal judges decided that he had propagandized terrorism in a social media share. The government could prosecute and give him a prison sentence between 2 to 6 years by stripping his MP status.
The political move to shut down the opposition comes after several polls revealed that the AKP and MHP coalition partners see a considerable loss of support among their voters. The racist, Islamic and neoliberal policies have all failed the people of Turkey as the economy tanked. Erdoğan’s son-in-law Berat Albayrak resigned through a Twitter message about two months ago, citing health reasons. He has not been heard of since. Nobody knows where he is or what he is doing since he literally disappeared. Together with him, 128 billion dollars disappeared from Turkey’s Treasury. The opposition is trying to find where the son-in-law, the lost ex-Minister of Treasury, could have gone into hiding. Maybe by tracing the national son-in-law, they could also find where the 128 billion dollars that disappeared could have gone. In response, president Erdoğan responded, “Don’t you have any other matter you can attend? May a rock as big as the son-in-law fall on your heads!”
In the economic catastrophe the country is experiencing, Erdoğan has no other alternative than to shut the opposition down anti-democratically to retake power.
