Basın-İş reported that the Artı management is disregarding the signed protocol and is dismissing the shop stewards. This move is followed by Artı annulling the signed contract that will lead to more than 50 journalists’ positions being eliminated.
Artı Gerçek is a progressive media corporation that hosts many opposition writers. It publishes news and views that can’t be published in the mainstream media in Turkey.
The corporation Artı recently signed a protocol with Basın İş, the journalists’ union under DISK, the Progressive Labor Union Confederation. The contract covers not only Artı workers but also other outlets that provide Artı with news and commentaries.
Basın-İş reported that the Artı management is disregarding the signed protocol and is dismissing the shop stewards. This move is followed by Artı annulling the signed contract that will lead to more than 50 journalists’ positions being eliminated.
The workers at Artı stopped work when they were denied any pay raises and were subject to management harassment. After lengthy negotiations with the union, the management agreed to raise wages and give voice to workers in the administration in a protocol signed by both sides.
However, after the protocol was signed, the management started laying off workers. The institution laid off shop steward Cenk Kolçak for allegedly “disregarding the hierarchy” at work.
While the union representatives tried to understand the events that led to this decision, the management announced further layoffs.
