There are 6 journalists under arrest in Turkey after the news of high ranking intelligence operatives’ deaths in Libya was published.
Even though no sensitive information were exposed, in a move both for revenge against the opposition and to intimidate honest journalists, the Turkish government arrested involved journalists in many contradictory courtroom twists and turns.
The information printed on the deaths had been discussed in much detail elsewhere, thus making it public knowledge. The news only covered the funeral of the dead agents and that they had been killed in Libya.
Whether the information was sensitive or not, the Turkish government wants to make an example of the journalists who had reported on the burial of the agents.
Yeniçağ, OdaTV and Yeni Yaşam publications and media were hit as the editors and reporters Murat Ağırel from Yeniçağ; Aydin Keser and Ferhat Çelik from Yeni Yaşam; and, Barış Terkoğlu, Hülya Kılınç and Barış Pehlivan were arrested for the news.
Today, in a surprise move, the administration of the Yeniçağ internet site decided to fire their General Publication Manager Batuhan Çolak without giving any reason. Çolak’s response to his firing had the accusatory language when he tweeted, “One leg of the operation was internal. Just could not see it.”
As it happened before, when the news spread about the “secret” funeral, and the personal social media and e-mail accounts of the reporters were hacked by some “mysterious” hackers and all information on the death of the Turkish intelligence officers were wiped clean, Batuhan Çolak’s personal accounts were hacked and accessed by some “mysterious” entities.
The media administrators are trying to convince the manager to receive his compensation at a lower rate as if he was receiving the minimum wage.
