The association members reminded that journalism is not intended to serve the political government or its interests but to serve the people in its right to obtain truthful news.
Turkish government, taking its cue from the president few weeks ago targeting the media, has escalated its attacks against journalists and the opposition media. Last week 4 journalists were detained, arrested, released, then arrested again. Sometimes the same court releasing and arresting the same journalist at the same time.
Reacting to this frontal attack on opposition journalists, the TGS, the Journalists’ Association of Turkey, staged rallies in five cities and denounced the repression on the media and the arrests of journalists.
The rallies took place in Ankara, Istanbul, İzmir, Adana and Diyarbakır cities.
The speakers and statements emphasized that the arrest of the TGS member journalists were political and were trumped up. The association members also reminded that journalism is not intended to serve the political government or its interests but to serve the people in its right to obtain truthful news.
