After taking their struggle to the court where the cases usually drag on for long periods of time, the verdict finally came recently where the court ruled for the plaintiffs, the workers
The workers at the traffic vehicle safety inspection had setup a picket line in front of the inspection station since November 19, 2018. What forced them to take the measure was the illegal firing of six workers at the station due to their union organizing efforts. The employer didn’t want to deal with unionized workers and had singled out the leaders of unionizing to get rid of them.
After taking their struggle to the court where the cases usually drag on for long periods of time, the verdict finally came recently where the court ruled for the plaintiffs, the workers.
The ruling accepted that the employer had fired the workers for unionizing efforts. Constitution in Turkey allows union organizing and makes it illegal to fire workers for such struggles. This verdict comes at the heel of other three court cases the workers had won previously bringing total number of workers who won their jobs back to nine.
With the ruling, the workers also won a settlement equaling 12 months’ worth of wages to be paid as penalty. The employer is also liable for the four months of back wages when the workers did not work bringing the total to 16 months of back pays.
