The attacks on women is on the rise in Turkey. With the Islamic government of AKP patriarchal social system has become more aggressive against the women. However, women in Turkey have also raised their conscientiousness in resisting the escalating assaults.
Following the women’s dance in Chile for freedom from rape and assaults, a group of women wanted to express their rage against the attacks on women in Turkey the same way.
In recent days, a woman was murdered while walking to her home. Other women have been assaulted and many killed by their husbands or boyfriends. The courts however have given the murderers lesser sentences because they “behaved very good in court.”
The group of women calling attention to these events gathered in Kadıköy Plaza in Istanbul, thinking they too could show their demand for freedom in Turkey. The organized demonstration was for women to dance and show their bodies belonged only to them and that women were not the property of men.
This didn’t go well with the Islamic Turkish government. The women were immediately surrounded by the Turkish police who attacked the dancers and beat them.
When the women started the performance, first the police shut down the music to prevent dancing. When the women insisted they had the constitutional rights and the performance was legal and legitimate the police took out their batons and dispersed the crowd.
The women chanted, “Don’t stop the women, go and stop the murderers!” When the women started to move towards Khalkedon Plaza from their original Kadıköy, police started beating, pushing and shoving, yet the women pushed back.
Many women were detained during the event. One detained leader is Fidan Ataselim, the General Secretary of the Women’s Assemblies.
In response, the Women’s organization tweeted: “Your detentions will not stop women from resisting. You cannot silence women. We will never walk alone!”
