On May 17th, the attorneys registered to the Bar association of Ankara were prepared to read a press release on the Internationally recognized Anti Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia Day. Once the lawyers took their position for the press release to condemn the alarming rise in attacks against the homosexuals, bi and trans people in front of the Bar Association in Ankara the police approached and threatened to detain them if they read the press release.
When lawyers tried to argue that LGBTQ rights are only a part of human rights, the police once again threatened to detain the entire group of lawyers for breach of a presidential decree that sees these meetings as being a threat to Turkish State security. The police did not give a chance for the lawyers to explain the law or the international human rights agreements that Turkey is a signatory of.
Lawyers were forced to retreat into the Bar Association office under police threats of violence.
