Defying government’s ban on Taksim Square May Day celebrations, more than 100 Representatives from the parliament has decided to participate in the celebrations.
Entire representative body of the DTP (Democratic Turkey Party), a Kurdish electoral party, will be present at the festivities. The social democratic CHP will levae around 20 representative in the parliament but will participate in the “illegal” May Day with 70-80 representatives. The governor of Istanbul had threatened to use force in case there was an attempt to gather at the historic plaza. CHP’s vice president Mustafa Özyürek said, “We will be with the laborers at Taksim Square on this very important day. We will celebrate the May Day at Taksim against all oppression and preventions from the government.
Ahmet Turk, the Kurdish leader of DTP said they would take their place alongside the workers at May Day. The party will cease their participation in the parliamentary work to be at the Taksim Square.
The president of ODP, the Freedom and Solidarity Party, the only socialist party in the parliament, Ufuk Uras also announced his participation in the celebrations against government’s intervention. Other representatives from other social democratic party, DSP will also be present at the celebrations.
