USA was forced to pay the $ 1.00 symbolic compensation fine due to its treatment of Assistant Professor Haluk Gerger. The US had issued an entrance visa to Mr. Gerger and his wife but had refused entry once they had arrived at New York. Mr. Gerger had filed for a symbolic compensation against the US at Ankara district 22 courts.
Mr. Gerger and his wife Renan had obtained a visa and had traveled to the US. But the couple, instead of being admitted, were arrested, photographed and fingerprinted by the US officials and were forcefully sent back with the next plane.
The court decided the US was guilty in 2004 and fined it to pay the $1.00 symbolic compensation to the couple as had been requested by Mr. Gerger. A higher court approved the decision in 2006.
The US paid the symbolic dollar and the accrued interest on February 14, 2007.
