High school students at Tuzlucayir district in the nation’s capital Ankara tore through the barriers and private security personnel after a week long organizing.
Several school administrations banned students from leaving the campus by locking the gates and employing private security guards to prevent the students from exiting during school time or even during lunch breaks.
High school students started an organizing drive protesting oppression in schools, “Red-det Ozgurles” (Oppose and become free) to reject the escalating many anti-democratic measures in high schools.
Today, more than 150 students gathered in the school yard to protest the private security guards and the measures. They chanted, “This is not a prison, we demand a democratic school,” and read a press release.
The students expressed that by confining the students to the school premises even during lunch time, the students were being forced to purchase food from contracted food provider, as a part of privatization and commercialization of education.
When the private guards tried preventing the students from leaving after the press release, students pushed them aside, and jumped over the fences and took to the streets. During this action, others forced the main gate and broke it open.
This action opened the access to school, and provided full entry to and exit from the school for the students.
