Pharmacists, getting their fare share of the destruction policies required by IMF and carried out by Turkish government are getting together to protect their careers and to protest the government policies against pharmacists.
The Chamber of Pharmacists has called for a ‘Big Meeting” in Istanbul on Sunday, January 14th to stage a demonstration.
On that date, pharmacists and supporters will demonstrate not only in Istanbul but also in İzmir, Bursa, Antalya, Erzurum, Zonguldak, Trabzon, Mersin, Kastamonu, Kocaeli cities where local chambers of pharmacists have also called for simultaneous demonstrations.
The call for demonstration stated, “In the stage we are in serious confusion and chaos reigns in the area of pharmaceuticals and pharmacies. The entire cost of this process is culminating on the pharmacists. The laws enacted due to IMF pressures and government compliance, the regulations brought about by the government which favors pharmaceutical and distribution monopolies, the decrees that constantly erode the trade rights of pharmacists have put the entire pharmacy community in an economic hardship.” The statement also said that in this environment the plan was headed towards pharmacy chains and market pharmacies to control the market.
The statement stressed it was not hard to fulfill the demands of the pharmacists: “With solidarity and cooperation, the actions put forward based on our own ability and power will be the determinant in overcoming the obstacles. We all need to do whatever we can and stand by our organizations in the struggle for ourselves, our careers, our families and our future.”
The demands voiced for the upcoming meeting includes:
1- It is not the duty of the pharmacist to carry the financial burden of the state. (referring to late and non payments of government backed prescriptions)
2- Instead of constantly changing rules and regulations and impossible to implement agreements, we need rational and stable agreements.
3- We do not want partial payments; we demand the return of the efforts and services we provide.
4- We are tired of losing our rights after each new law or regulation. We demand a regulatory process that would eliminate the erosion of our rights.
5- We demand laid out authorization and responsibilities for our trade organizations specified by law.
6- To become a pharmacist is a trade formation. We demand our trade rights.
7- We demand the destruction in health care.
8- As pharmacists, doctors, engineers, teachers, workers, laborers we want to live healthily and in a humane level of living standard.
9- We are tired of repeating, and the people are tired of hearing the same issue: Enough is enough. We demand stable and permanent pharmaceutical policies.
10- The errors stemming from the provisional system can not be blamed on pharmacists. We demand a working provisional system.
11- We demand government takeovers without payment. We demand the destruction of pharmacies.
12- We demand that pharmaceuticals be available and affordable.
13- We demand that the losses pharmacists suffer due to drug pricing schemes be compensated. We demand new judicial regulations to protect pharmacy economies.
14- We demand the layered discount policy to be re-started.
15- We demand a just prescription distribution system.
16- We demand that the right to a healthy life to be provided to all members of the society.
