Local governments, having already distributed many services to private contracting companies, started, as a last effort, to contract out firefighting as well.
The Municipality of Greater Istanbul initiated an RFP and hired 1,250 workers for firefighting from a contracting company.
The contracted firm performs consulting services on landscaping and tree planting and maintenance. In reality, such companies are established by the close allies of the governing parties to receive such pork barrel contracts from the government.
While contracting out is problematic due to the expertise required by the nature of work, many have wondered how landscaping is related to firefighting and how this company would contribute to preventing or fighting fires.
The firefighters already employed by the municipality are showing reaction to the decision. They are expressing that the decision is problem prone due to differences in pay, expertise and knowledge levels.
On the other hand, calculating cost-profit figures in a dangerous area such as firefighting where lives are in jeopardy is another questionable motive.
