On its 26th anniversary, pro-democracy and labor forces have not forgotten the military junta that was epitomized with the US president’s words, “Our boys have done it!”
The people, labor and pro-democracy groups have reminded the world once again the connection between the US that has setup a high number of counter-guerrilla organizations and fascist military juntas around the world in the 1970’s and the bloody, fascist military junta in Turkey.
The march in nation’s capital brought together many democratic organizations, friends, and families of those murdered by the Us supported military coup in Turkey on September 12, 1980. Marching on one of the most visible boulevards in Ankara, the crowd condemned the US and its local collaborators in what turned out to be one of the darkest periods in Turkey’s history. The crowd brought the condemnation to the US Embassy’s door where a rally was held to commemorate the martyrs of the military coup and to condemn the US.
Speaking on behalf of the “anti-coup platform,” the president of the Ankara branch of 78’s Generation Organization, Ruşen Sümbüloğlu said, “We came here to remind once again the unceasing and deep connection between imperialism and fascist juntas.”
He continued, “This day is your responsibility. This corrupt system that you established and tried protecting with blood and violence is yours! 26 years ago, your president Jimmy Carter, on hearing the successful fascist military takeover, smiled from ear-to-ear and said, ‘Our boys have done it!’ Yes, they were successful. Those you gave the mission to be accomplished were successful in creating the most bloody oppression and tyranny in Turkey’s history; they were successful in running the most bloody fascist dictatorships in history to be able to get your medals and praises.” He also added that the brave, patriot people were massacred during the bloody dictatorial regime and labeled them as “Brave children of the People.” Then he asked the US Embassy, “But, who’s kids are the junta leaders then?”
The recent attacks against democratic newspapers and the media where many reporters and editors of the weekly Atilim were arrested was also mentioned in the talk.
In the afternoon, the crowd gathered at the gate of the National Assembly to give the more than 25,000 signatures demanding that the fascist military junta leaders be brought to justice.
