The workers of Türk Harb-İş union protested the decision to cut down employment and to contract work out to contractors with a march to the local government of Incirlik.
The workers refused to board the service buses waiting to take them from the base and instead staged a long march participated also by union officials.
Incirlik streets echoed with the slogans and chants, “Long live our honorable struggle,” Don’t be silent! If you are, you will be the next!”
Abdullah Erol, a member of Türk Harb-İş union board, said the decision to lay off workers due to cost cutting measures taken by the US Air Force was troublesome. He said, “We have seen many of our friends fired in the past due to contracting jobs out. It is bothersome to see that there are as many contractors as regular workers. These facts cause concerns. We will not allow the reduction of work force at the Incirlik Air Force base.
