The members of the dock and ship builders union, Limter İş were arrested yesterday when they tried to protest the occupational “accidents” which continues to claim workers’ lives.
The police had attacked and arrested the workers after the protest erupted for the high occupational murders in the docks. In the attack, the cops had thrown explosives and gas bombs against the dock workers seeking safe working conditions.
Only couple of days earlier, an explosion in the ship building plant had injured 7 workers and the union had demanded the bosses to improve the working conditions.
The conditions were also highlighted in the Human Rights Association report which symbolized the industry as a death camp. According to the report, in the last 8 months, 13 workers were killed. The last 50 days witnessed the death of 5 dock workers. Many workers in Tuzla ship building yards work without social security or insurance. The report also adds that the “accidents” were due to employers’ greed to make more profits.
