The attorneys, judges and prosecutors belonging to the Contemporary Lawyers Association in Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey condemned the Turkish government’s secrecy in the dealings and agreements it signs with the US in a press release.
The announcement has the following section: “After the US’s expectation to start the invasion of Iraq from Turkey was rejected by the strong reaction from the public in March 1st, 2003, the Turkish government, in its attempt not to repeat such a blunder for the US demands, is going beyond the bounds of its legal limits and is passing the Cabinet resolutions in secrecy. The decisions that address the same issue in all of 2004, 2005 and 2006 are kept secret. Nobody is aware of what resolutions were passed by the cabinet! And since the content is kept a secret, it becomes impossible to challenge these decisions through legal means.
“The fact that the government does not make any announcements on the matter does not in any way reduce its liability and responsibility morally or otherwise. To support a war and to keep silent about it bears the same responsibility. ”
The press release also called for all people involved in legal matters to heed the call for legal responsibility in the face of the matter.
