More than 5000 union members who traveled from around the country have started a two day sit-in protest in the latest action by the Confederation of Public Workers Unions organized under the slogan of, “We Will Exercise Our Right to Collective Bargaining”
The collective bargaining period, which will cover 2007, is the issue being discussed between the union and the Turkish government. The 3rd round of talks had ended yesterday with government offering only 4% raise, much lower than what is being demanded by the union confederation. The 4% raise offer had caused reaction from many unions because it is much lower than even what inflation had taken away from the workers in the last year.
Last week, the union confederation KESK, had announced that they would take it to the streets to demand their right to a collective bargaining. Before the 4th round of talks begin tomorrow, the union members representing every corner of the country had started the sit-in protest.
