Ali Paşa Şanlı, the president of Education Workers Union, Eğitim-Sen was sent to prison by the court.
Ali Paşa Şanlı was arrested due to being a leftist and “having been involved in actions.” In his hearing it was learned that another court in Malatya had issued an arrest warrant against him as well. The court in Eskişehir, considering this arrest warrant improsened Şanlı.
The secretary of the union made the following announcement for the event:
“We are deeply troubled that Ali Paşa Şanlı, who has been living in Eskişehir for the last 50 years, teaching for 27 years and has been giving a struggle within our union for the last 16 years has been arrested because, even with all the technological advancements, they could not locate his address.”
The union officials did not know immediately what charges were brought against Şanlı in Malatya. They are suspecting that an issue left over from the 1980 September 12 Military Coup may be the cause.
They expect the union local president to be heard and released once he is transferred to Malatya for his trial.
It was also revealed that in 1984 Şanlı had been arrested for a period related to a revolutionary organization.
