Daily Evrensel’s Reply: Nasrallah’s Interview – Kamil Tekin Sürek
August 22, 2006
The interview published in our newspaper echoed across the world. Many left parties and organizations found it interesting. The communist and left parties generally found the words of Nasrallah positive.
However, an article published in the internet site sendika.org claimed the interview could have been fake.
In this article, they say that Lebanese Gilbert Achcar had sent a mail to Counterpunch which also published the interview from Evrensel. In his mail, Achcar is indicating that the interview may not be authentic. Sendika.org asked Evrensel for an explanation.
Interviewers who talked to Nasrallah are still in Lebanon. Most probably they are in touch with the officials of Hezbollah. We assume the editors of Sendika.org don’t claim that Hezbollah is unaware of the interview, which affected many political circles, especially the left, in the world. Since Hezbollah has not rejected the interview and since the interviewers are still in Lebanon talking to Hezbollah officials, it is understood that Hezbollah does not have an objection to the interview.
Even before the Nasrallah interview, many sources in Iran, Syria, Lebanon and some political circles in Arab countries had voiced similar things mentioned in the interview.
When we went to Damascus as a team on “Eastern Conference” to present our solidarity to the people and intellectuals of Syria, everybody we talked to, intellectuals and right or left wing political circles expressed similar views.
The Arab left or communist parties, organizations or the intellectuals do not approach Hezbollah or Nasrallah like our secular “leftists” do.
Entire leftist intellectuals we talked to who participated in the actions against the occupation in Iraq had something positive to say about Hezbollah which surprised us.
Many left and communist parties repeatedly published many declarations which announced their solidarity with Iran, Syria, People’s Republic of Korea, Venezuela and Cuba against the US threats and attacks.
The General Secretary of the Communist Party of Greece went to Lebanon with a team and showed his support with Lebanon against the Israeli attack.
When Israel attacked Lebanon, Venezuela recalled its Ambassador to Israel. Chavez visited Iran and signed treaties.
Those who follow the political developments, especially of the communist parties or left movements know very well that the left and communist parties are developing solidarity with the people of Iran, Syria, Palestine and Lebanon against Israel and the “Greater Middle East Plan.” And, these relationships are not confined to protocol level only.
Finally, as those who follow the left movements know, the thoughts expressed in that interview had been said before in many platforms.
We are not aware who the Lebanese Gilbert Achcar is. Neither do we know why he is raising such an opposition. Yet, we do know that the policies and approaches of Hezbollah explained in the interview are what have been the policies and approaches of Hezbollah.
Not only Hezbollah, but the Communist Party of Lebanon, three different communist parties of Syria, left resistance in Iraq and all the left progressive intellectuals in the Middle East also support similar views. I think this is positive from the perspective of the anti-imperialist struggle.
Instead of advancing ideas or participating in the discussions about the political developments in the world, the region or the tactics of the left or socialists, It is futile to try to find something wrong when it does’t exist.
