A mass rally and march to protest Israel’s aggression was held in one of the most crowded central streets in Ankara. A large contingent from unions, associations, political parties, democratic organizations and students protested the barbaric attacks of the murderous Israeli regime.
At 12:45 the crowd gathered at Ziya Gokalp Boulvard. The members of the Peoples Houses and Student Collectives shut down the boulevard and initiated the rally. When the police attacked the Peoples Houses members the participants of the Socialist Platform of the Oppressed came to their support against the cops. Using this opportunity, the Communist Part of Turkey closed down the traffic from the other end. Having succeeded in their fight against the police, the march took place on the boulevard instead of the sidewalk that police tried to force. The rally targeted the US and Israel imperialism and called for universal resistance and struggle against them.
The marchers chanted slogans such as, “Terrorist Israel get out of Palestine” and “Israel take warning, don’t forget Elrom” (referring to the Israeli Ambassador to Turkey punished by revolutionaries in 1970’s).
The representative from KESK, the Confederation of Public Workers Unions Ankara region, Kayhan Özkul read a press release at the rally. He said, “The escalation of Israel’s aggression after couple of soldiers had been kidnapped is against all legal or human principles, without any regard for women, children elderly or human lives. In addition it is bombing even the hospitals and the country’s infrastructure.”
He called attention to the attitude the USA and other collaborating countries have been demonstrating in the face of Israel’s aggression and said their behavior of not condemning Israel’s massacres actually showed the real face of imperialism.
Kayhan Özkul also called attention to Turkey’s position which he characterized as not being different from other collaborators. He added, “The action of the JDP government which has been trying to grab a piece of every dirty imperialist relationship in the region for years is completely inadequate.” Özkul demanded Turkey to have a more open oppositional stance against Israel’s massacres. He said the heart of the people of Turkey beat with the people of the Middle East and the resisting people will be victorious.
