After the decision to contract out the cleaning services by the municipal government on July of 2004, the Genel-İş union which represents municipality workers had filed a complaint with the court of law. The civil case court finally reached a decision yesterday and ruled in favor of the workers. After this decision, the municipality is expected to cancel the contract and restart the cleaning services from within its own organization.
While the decision asserts the position of the union to be legally right, it also represents a precedence for other pending law suits against local governments lining up to privatize and contract out city services.
