Students in the University of May 19 (OMÜ) held a rally in protest when Coca Cola wanted to open a commercial stand on their campus.
Students gathered in front of the Collage of Literature at OMÜ and marched to the site where the Coca Cola stand was set up. The students held a sit-down protest in front of the stand. The students reminded that the owner of Coca Cola had announced on CNN that all profits made in July 2005 and the share profits of the follwing months would be turned over to the Israeli navy and demanded, “Coca Cola Get Out, the University is Ours”.
In the speeches given it was pointed out that Coca Cola is a symbol of capitalism and US imperialism, has supported US agression directed at innocent civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and various regions in the world and now preparing to attack Iran. The students made it clear that Coca Cola is playing an active role in this process.
Students continued their rally although Deputy President of the Universty, Prof. Ertuğrul Bayraktarkatal, Counselor Prof. Dr. Haluk Kefelioğlu and the Collage Dean Dekanı Prof. Dr. İsmet Şenel asked them to disperse.
After the University Administration and the security guards had left the site, the students continued to rally until closing time.
As a result, Coca Cola’s advertising activities were rather subdued.
