Police in Kars, a city in eastern Turkey, prevented the handicapped children and their parents from protesting the closure of the rehabilitation center for the handicapped.
The students and their families wanted to see the governor to explain to him their problems and ask his help for a solution. However, when they arrived at the governor’s office, they were stopped by the police who were carrying their shields and truncheons. The protesters displayed their placards that said, “We want Special Education Centers”, “Is it a Crime To be handicapped?” and chanted slogans asking the governor to come out and meet them.
Reacting to the police warnings that they would be detained if they didn’t disperse, the families chanted “Shame On you” but had to leave before talking to the governor. They are planning to take legal action against the state.
