Genel-İş Union from DISK (Confederation of Progressive Labor Unions) decided to strike when collective bargaining failed to reach an agreement.
President of the 3rd Region of Genel-İş Union Veysel Demir stated that when no agreement could be reached in the collective bargaining talks concerning the 40 workers employed at Kartal Municipality within the legal time limit, a decision to strike was taken.
Demir announced that the strike notice would be posted at the door of the Municipal building on May 24 and said, ” Our aim is not to strike. We want the labor agreement signed and our friends working.”
Veysel Demir said the workers insist that their net income/month (including all benefits), which is currently 900-1050 YTL ($600-700) be raised to 1450-1500 YTL ($965-1000).
When the talks ended in disagreement, Demir said the employer withdrew its counter offer.
