The representative of the Privatization Administration, which is supported by the World Bank, was protested by the workers during his privatization presentation at the publicly owned sugar plant in Bor.
The project, which plans to give support to the workers who will be losing their jobs after privatization drew anger among the workers. The representatives giving the presentation were protested and the workers walked away. The sugar workers union, Şeker-İş’ branch president said, “We showed the necessary reaction to those who are trying to silence us by distributing handouts from the World Bank.”
The presenters did not allow the union president to ask a question during their briefing. To protest this top-down dictate, the president marched out. This brought protest from the workers who started pounding on tables and started chanting, “Sugar is Our Country, You can not sell it!” The workers then followed their union president and left the meeting.
As he addressed the workers, the union president Celal Tuğrul said, “They came here with the directives of the government to check us out. First they put the plant on the market with the IMF’s orders. Now, as if giving out handouts with the World Bank’s money, they are trying to silence us. We do not need any social support projects. We do have our jobs, we are defending our employment, and we want to continue production.”
