İsmail Yılmaz, a 25 year old worker earning his living building plumbing systems was crushed to death under a mud slide at the construction site.
Last year 858 laborers lost their lives in the 4,688 work related accidents. This figure, on the other hand is what is being reported by the secretary of Employment. The 60% of the work force is irregular in Turkey and no statistics exist for these workers who are not registered or documented. In the construction sites and small workshops, there are tens of occupational accidents that go unreported everyday. When these ‘accidents’ are studied, it is hard to call them accidents because not even the elementary safety measures are taken by the bosses at workplaces due to cost reduction reasons. These measures cost the lives of the workers everyday, called the “workplace murders.”
