AKP (JDP-Justice and Development Party), the ruling party passed the Social Security draft bill; an IMF imposition, with great speed in spite of strong opposition by the workers. The parliament will discuss the General Health Insurance Proposal, a part of the security bill draft on Tuesday. All progressive worker organizations are getting ready to take to the streets in protest to the new law.
The Peoples’ Houses (PH) Headquarters issued a statement calling the people to protest until the law is annulled or withdrawn.. The statement said in summary:
IMF orders; AKP implements; Peoples’ demands are ignored!
Now is the time to take the voice of the people out in the streets!
The statement said that since AKP got the right to govern , it has been aggressively attacking the basic institutions of a social state and peoples’ economic and social rights.
The plunders of transnational capital in everything from housing, transportation, employment, to food in our country is realized through the collaboration of the AKP government.
All the public services, specially education and healthcare, which are rights for the people and responsibilities for the state are being privatized, eliminated or made ‘pay for’ services by the AKP government.
The statement accused the government of carrying out the IMF demands at the expense of the people. It stated:
-it had put our health for sale so profits could be made
-to save money it had increased the retirement age while reducing the retirement pay
– the AKP municipalities had privatized or outsourced public services such as gas, water, transportation
As part of their movement to resist, PH collected 620.000 signatures for free education and healthcare, 2.253.275 votes against the social security proposal (40% of the votes) in a referendum organized together with TTB (doctors’ association) KESK (public employees) and DISK (Progressive Labor Union) However, AKP has once again proved that it heeds the commands of the IMF and not the voices of the people.
PH called on the people to come to Ankara to stop the passage of the social security health bill draft and Support PH in their struggle for free health care.
